Why will microsoft word 2000 not start?

As soon as I attempt to run it, it instantly utilizes 100% of the cpu and the AVG E-mail scanner kicks in; then about 5-8 minutes later, 2 unresponsive microsoft word 2000 windows open up and then nothing. I already sent an error report and am not holding my breath.

Strangely, it also seems I can not install windows updates.

Is there anything I could try (all I have in the way of security software is AVG free) that doesn't involve me installing spyware removers and such?...or does it seem that's my only option at this point? Restart your computer.

Immediately go to Windows update and get all updates for windows.

Restart.

Install Word 2000

Go to MS site and update Word.

Restart.

Try Word. Should work fine.

Reinstall AVG

Get all updates for AVG.

Try Word again. If it has the same old problem, then AVG and Word are probably not compatible. Uninstall AVG and use another AV program.

The best solution is to just go into History and view there.

If it is clean, go into My Computer, Documents and Settings, Their user name, and then cookies. That will show you the sites they have been visiting.

Important for you to understand that SpywareBlaster, an excellent program by the way, DOES NOT delete or get rid of Spyware for you; it PREVENTS YOU from getting it in the first place, but you need those other programs for deleting the baddies. SpywareBlaster IS NOT a scanner. SB needs to be put on a computer that is clean to begin with, it will not help you to clean it up. Once you get your system clean, than SB is an excellent program to help it stay that way. Good luck.
AFTER SCAN go to the bottom of the program and click show log file. check all the findings and click next DELETE all of them. The go to status at the top left and click that. Then open the quarantine list and click on that and then delete that also. It is perfectly safe to do.

Well i've disabled system restore and messenger in administrative settings, and I seem to have lost the CD and key that lets me reboot my pc to factory settings.

I'm not really interested in downloading any anti spyware programs, as every answer on here seems to sound like they are advertising anti spyware programs with spyware embedded into them.

I have AVG free version, it showed that i have erased the viruses, yet nothing happens, there is still a little yellow flashing ! button on my taskbar, and popups keep on appearing.

Internet Explorer doesnt allow me to access web pages?

My 30 day kasparov liscence expired and after uninstalling it all web pages features, like typing boxes like this one do not work, clicking any links do not work and anything on a web page that has a next 1...2...etc takes me back to the top of the same page. I have disabled my firewall entirely and enabled it entirely but the results are the same, I installed Internet Explorer 7, results are the same. Firefox browser works perfectly but I cannot do a search in my computer either, the dog comes out but there are no boxes allowing me to type a search in (this is in Windows Explorer)

All my windows updates are done via ms web page, I use Ewido anti spyware and Spyware Terminator, Clam anti virus and AVG free antivirus all running at the same time, when disabling each of the other the results are the same, when disabling all the results are still the same. Please help!

I had that same problem just yesterday.

The problem started after I updated my windows. Finally what I did was:

Click on start in the lower left corner of your computer. Click on Help and Support, go to Pick a task and click on Undo changes. The next page will show a calendar where you will select a day when your system was last working. Your computer will shut down temporarily but after that it should be ok.

Norton Internet Security is a great example of bloatware. Personally, I think you would be better off with individual applications, rather than the suite....JMHO. You didn't mention your OS, processor, memory, etc. There may be many things you could do to speed things up, but, I would bet losing some of your unnecessary startup apps would have the most impact.

Sounds like someone is scanning files when you start up, probably Spyware Doctor. I would recommend you uninstall Spyware Doctor and use Spybot and Ad-Aware instead. Both are free, run them when you like, not at startup.

I am having problems with my sound playback. Sounds are skipping and sound scratchy. Please help!?

I was using windows media player and had no problems. I was able to surf the net, run windows live messenger and listen to music all at the same time. now i can barely move the mouse with out it messing up. The sound problems started about a week or so after i had downloaded I-Tunes. I have since removed it. I have also upgraded to the newest version of WMP after going through a troubleshoot. This Hasnt helped. I have also tried adjusting hardware acceleration and sample rate conversion quality.

I thought it may have been a virus problem, my protection at the time was not very good, (old norton that always had problems). Norton was removed and i replaced it with AVG Free version and i used Windows defender for spyware. I did buy Defender Pro and have switched to it but i am unsure if i just should have just stuck with AVG. So far i seem to be free and clear. I am now wondering if ultimately its a RAM issue. I have 512Mb, Dell, celeron 2.66Ghz. SoundMax Digital Audio.

Well, it could be RAM or old hardware, but I doubt it. Sound uses very little resources. And if it worked once with what you have, then it should work again.

My guess is......

1) A software issue. In which case, the best thing to do, and I know your going to hate me for saying it, but you should wipe your hard drive and re-install Windows. That will fix a ton of problems.

2) A hardware issue. But you won't know for sure unless you do step 1 and the problem continues.

The other thing you can do is check all you wires and make sure they are plugged in securely. But they probably are.

Save you important files to a CD or external HD the re-install windows. Your computer will love you for it. :-)

Alright - I know that there is other questions on here simular to this one but all of them simply suggested programs that I could use. I want toknow if there is any other way - because I'm using some of the best free anti-virus stuff out there.

I'm running on Windows Defender and Avast! Anti-Virus, and Avast! Internet Security. Now, my Windows Defender picks this thing up, and says that delete was successful, but then no more than 5 minutes later I start getting it again. I've tried deleteing it, moving it to the virus chest...nothing. It won't go away.

So, I tried this trojen remover called a-Squarred Free. Taht picked up all my malware and spyware and deleted it - but I log onto my computer this morning and the virus is still there!

I keep getting random pop ups even when I don't have a blasted IE Window open, and little alerts that are like the updates that pop up for windows update - you know, the whole yellow triangle icon and the bubbles containing the messeges?

win32.trojan is spyware, not a virus. As good as Avast is, and I have it, so I know it's good, it will not find or remove a trojan. You need SpyBot Search %26 Destroy, and probably Ad-Aware to get rid of this.
Looks like a Trojan horse. I would try STOPzilla. Download for free trial and it should take care of it. If not, remove it, and it was free. You will have to disable the other programs when you download STOPzilla. Anti-viruses don't seem to do well against spy ware, Malware, and there is always a new virus.
log onto symantec. com. you may have to log on in safe mode.to clean... a pathway may be causing it again or it is infecting other files, in this case you may have gotten a blended threat too. a replication worm. eww. log onto hijack this. com and see if that can help.

What you have is a downloader it download viruses and other downloaders over and over.

You can try going to housecall.trendmicro.com to do an online scan. This will get rid of most things avast and defender miss.

Don't use mcafee. Adaware and spybot are both good and better at removing spyware than defender.

Personally, I use the free ones. But if you've got cash, go ahead and buy. There's even a AVG pro that you can buy. Usually, these paid anti-virus programs have firewall and anti-spyware included. But you can use separate programs like Spyware Terminator and Zone Alarm Pro.

Cause i use avira antivirus personaledition classic free version. I just installed ad-aware for spyware protection. Do i need to install a malware protection for malware protection or avira comes with it? Sorry but I dunno how god Avira is. I'd recommend you to get hte ZoneAlarm Internet Security, cuz it's known to have the best firewall, and u seem to know it too. Back then, now that it uses Kaspersky's Scanning Engine, it got the best Anti-Virus, too. And the Anti-Spyware is really cool. It finds everything, I took the Spy-Sweeper trial, scanned my pc for Spyware and it found nothing, which means the Anti-Spyware had found everything.

How can I make a backup of my internet history?

I want it so when I go to a site, it not only goes in Windows automatic history, but in a seperate document or file, that way if it get's cleared, I still hae it, (no, I wouldn't be the one clearing it) but I'd also what it to say what it was like Windows does, (like if I do a sear it says Google searrch -- pickels).

The history is saved in the registry located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Int... Explorer\TypedURLs if you want to access it, run "regedit" from the start menu. Then you can export it into a registry file. This file.reg is a text file that you can open with notepad.

I recently had to format my computer as I think I had a really bad virus on it. Now though, my computer is really slow, almost like dial up for some sites. It wont let me download real player, or windows live messenger, and probably more but have given up trying to get my computer back up to my previous settings.

Hi there, it is very hard to answer your problem without knowing what the full specification of your PC is and what operating system you are running on it.

I have had many bring their PCs to me with this sort of problem and usually a complete reformat and re-installation of the operating system does the trick. If there is no noticeable improvement at this stage before installing or downloading any further programs then check that you memory cards have not become unseated on your processor, if OK then add one program at a time and check performance after.

Why won't my laptop turn on?

I just borrowed my friends Compaq Presario V4000 to do some free servicing for him (disk fragmenting, removing adware/spyware, etc.). I was using it for about an hour and the battery was starting to get low. I plugged the AC adapter into the wall, and in the computer to charge it. Everything was working fine. After about 2-3 hours of use, the computer just shut off and will not come back on! No warnings!

There is no sign of life at all. No lights, fan noise, etc! I tried unplugging the AC adapter and holding the power button for 30 seconds. I also tried it with the AC Adapter connected. Nothing!

I did notice the AC Adapter getting kinda hot before the shut off. I'm thinking that the heatsink got disconnected and the overheat caused the cumputer to turn off suddenly. I heard this is a problem with Compaqs. If this is the case, should any led lights come on or anything? No matter what I do, it will not come on.

Compaqs are terrible. Buy a dell or an HP.

Second, it could POSSIBLY be your motherboard burned out, and the AC Adapters are usually always hot so don't worry about that.

People always think its a virus that did something, 90% of the time its the stupid person that did it.

It COULD be hardware failure and the laptop plain out sucks.

Hello I am running a XP SP2 1 GB RAM P4 2.8 GHz and I have a few free light security software on my computer including (Spyware Blaster, Avast AntiVirus, ADAware SE, Pc Cillin Internet Security [The Updates have expired so now I use it mainly as a firewall])

On an occasion when I am browsing a window appears saying firefox has encountered an error and needs to close. Coinsidentally it happens a lot when I have to firefox screens up or a yahoo mail up. Why is this happening?

If it helps to know I turned Windows Firewall off because it kept blocking my online gaming (Steam - which is counterstrike, cs cource, condition zero....)

Firefox has released several updates this week, and Microsoft will next week. Also check out Yahoo for updates too if you use their toolbars and Instant Messaging Services. You can set your computer to do these updates for you in some cases. Also why not Microsoft Beta Anti-Spy? And AVG anti virus programs ? They will not conflict with you other programs. And again they like Avast can auto update and run when you tell them too. Also check into WinPatrol. It is free too. And it auto-runs and tells you everything that is running on your system, not just the start up menu. It also gives you free info on them unlike task Manager from Windows. And you can tell your Windows Firewall to let your game run through the firewall. If it has subordinate programs to chat or play on the net you can include them too. But security is the number one thing you should take care of. Updates and programs to fight the threats out there. If you look you will find them free. And the ones I named are not just trials. They are for the life of the license agreement. Finally find an ISP that will block out a lot of the known threats in emails and such. You might pay more, but the peace of mind is worth it.
it's not just firefox. internet explorer does that to me sometimes too. just a glitch - remember, nothing's perfect
Does it happen at certain websites? Sometimes webpages just crash your browser, like Heavy.com. When I'm on a media link site they don't tell you it's a link to Heavy.com so when the window opens and it's Heavy.com I say "DAMMIT HEAVY!" and shut the window and then Firefox crashes. I multitask too much so I'm always switching windows too so sometimes it crashes that way.
Try reinstalling firefox or updating it. It may be doing that because of corrupted browser or outside mallicious access to ur computer. Turn on firewall and see if it helps.. its recommended to keep it on anyways.. if u want to play online games just add these programs and the ports they use to the exception list.

I couldn't tell you why it is doing this, but my machine also does this occasionally. Instead of having to reboot, I installed the Taskbar Repair Tool (the free version). I put a shortcut in the start menu. Whenever my taskbar disappears, I call the start menu by pressing the Windows key, and use this handy utility. Here is a shortcut to it:

Computer Slowdown?

Hi, My PC's has been trouble free for the last 16 months! no viruses, spyware or anything! but in the last week i've been getting a message that pops up every 5-10 minutes saying the following:

svchost.ese - no disk

There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive D.

You then have to hit cancel 10-20 times until is goes.

Any ideas how to solve this one?

when you start up svchost loads services from the registry to run. there can be more than one instance of svchost in the task manager (conrol-alt-delete)

if your main boot drive (the one with windows on) has been renamed then it could be the case that a removeable drive is now calling it's self c drive.

for example if windows resides on d: and c: is a memory stick drive then svchost will be looking for the services to load in the c drive. so if there is nothing in c: it will ask you to load the disk (whereas in reality it should be looking in d:)

click start- my computer to check which drive has the windows folder and then rename the drive if neccessary.

First you must clean-up the current infection.

Run both of these on-line scans and let them remove what they find. Both are free and excellent at detecting and removing malware free of charge. There is no need to un-install your current protections before using these.

You probably heard bunch of topics about this. I tried to read all of them. Every time I click on link at either Yahoo or Google it redirects to some other advertisement site.

I need serious help. I tried Zone Alarm, CCleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy, Registry Mechanic, Microsoft Defender. Tried free version of Webroot Spysweeper and PC Tools Spyware Doctor.

Its a false positive. The hosts entry is just the default search provider for Internet Explorer. STOPzilla is known for alot of ridiculous false positives.It used to contain spyware a few years ago. I hear they stopped distributing spyware, but it's still a mediocre program. I hear the pop-up blocker is the best part of it.

You can edit the Hosts file entries in Notepad. But, just like the Registry, make a full backup of it before you start. Deleting entries is fairly simple, just highlight them, click backspace then Save.

I've never liked popup blockers because they usually stop what's already infecting your computer. Use a firewall, an antivirus and some anti-spyware applications.
You can manually delete the key by going Start %26gt; run %26gt; "regedit"

Then search for the key yourself.

Let me warn you first, be sure to back up your registry before you do anything because your computer may suffer from permanent damages should you try to delete any keys which are necessary for the start up of your computer. If I were you, I won't touch those stuffs. I will probably ignore that spyware that STOPzilla claims it is. Don't trust it!

Considering if you were selling it with the OS disc and all included software, etc, this system would likely fetch I would say around $675-$1200. This range is optimum and the lower portion is more likely than the higher. From the experience as a computer builder and IT, the processor brings the price up, but your major pitfall is that this system is used and not "new" and as such must be asessed as a depreciated item without warranty. I would say a fair price would be in the range of $600 to $850.

No it is NOT "safe". ALL P2P has inherrant risks. If you are well educated you can minimize those risks. If you are not well versed in computers, you shouldn't use P2P. Limewire bearshare and frost appeal to the least educated and most naieve of all computer users and virus distributers know that and exploit it. the first rule of downloading things off the internet, is that there will always be potential problem if you do stupid things, including downloading. limewire is one of the worst programs to use for downloading. alternatives like firewire are no better. they work on a peer-2-peer network where you are reliant on one person for a file so it's slow for larger files and you don't know if the file you are downloading is legit. moreover many of the programs are ridden with spyware for example kaza had a spyware built into it so that's why people switched over to kaza lite.

I can't delete Pest Capture?

I have Windows XP. I was notified that I was infected with Trojan and other viri. It was suggested to down load various free scans. Pest Capture was my choise only because it was the first one. After download and free scan it reported that I had malware and spyware viri and I should purchase the license to continue. Since I don't like to give credit card info over the Net I declined. Now I have this Huge dialogue Pest Capture box on my screen and am unable to delete because it states the "uninstall or remove has been disabled". And it's TRUE. I went into the Control Panel to Add or Remove.....etc. and can't delete it.......A close friend suggested that I Re-Format my Windows XP but being a novice I"m not sure if I could do it. I got a price of $50 but I would really like to see if I could do it myself. It's not the cost I'd just like to try. Adware Alert (Ad-ware se 2007) Is this program recommended?adware

Well, I went and looked for it in Yahoo! and found the website, NO it's not Ad-aware Se its different, but it is on "download.com" website, which is affiliated by C-Net. So there "alright" in my book, but it's up to you. Ad-aware Se is better, I have been using it for years, three or 4 so far....great program, easy and simple and runs really fast. I also have Reg Mechanic, Norton (but runs slow, and bogs my 2.4 gig down) AVG (runs a bit faster than norton) and PC Tools Antivirus (same makers of Registry Mechanic) and i still get some viruses, but I get rid of them too and keep most of them out. I have not used Adaware SE 2007 yet, but I have used the AdAware Line for years. You can get the free version from www.lavasoft.de and try it out. Like I said, I have used it for years - the free version that is. I also use Spybot Search and Destroy from www.safer-networking.org. Both scanners seem to find different things but find a lot of the same spyware, adware and malware. Additional software from www.javacoolsoftware.com would be SpywareBlaster and Spyguard. You install those two and basically forget them - except for updates. The first two you need to schedule scans or perform manual scans periodically. Hope this helps...
is it Ad-aware 2007? I have this software but it sucks. Cannot remove malware totally. Try Spyware Doctor. It is very good. If u want the full version, buy it or download it from hacker websites.
I've used that program for a couple years it is great. I recommend it. You can download the free version of it from there web site as well

Why is my computer slow?

i have dial up,defrag every week,use disk cleanup every week,use AVG antiviris,spyware bot for antispy,i have 88% of free space available and still my comp is slow,whenever i try to exit out of a page it freezes then says internet explorer has encounterd a error,has to close.Anyone have any ideas,pls help

1)Stomp auto-starting programs. Click Start %26gt; Run and type "msconfig" at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need "Adobe Reader Speed Launch"? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable Windows system components.

2) Clean up the disk. Uninstall unneeded programs (especially those that run at startup and/or put something in the system tray), run Disk Cleanup, and defragment the drive. This is a good first step that will almost always take a few seconds off boot time and application loads for any computer.

3) Run a full anti-virus and anti-spyware scan. I would recommend using AVG Free Anti-virus, AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot, Ad-Aware.

4) Clean up the registry. This is controversial, as some experts claim registry cleaners don't really help. I've seen evidence to the contrary, so I recommend doing it if you've got a major slowdown. CCleaner is free and worth running.

To search for spyware and disinfect, try the program "Ad-Aware". I personally use this program and I recommend it to everybody.

Spybot Search and Destroy works nice.

Also, Ad-Aware (Apparently it's supposed to be spelled this way, not how I had it before, Adaware).

Both are free programs that will help.
it is very hard to remove spyware it is 100 times worse than viruses, try Kerio, it is not a antivirus software it is a firewall, you can only block the spyware from sending info out of your comouter aslo stop it from getting viruses and adverts if you know the name of you spyware,i strongly recommand you NOT to download any spyware remover software as they are spyware them selves, the best method is to reboot ur pc, you can reboot it withought loosing ur work, by repair or install on anoth drive, try system restore first before rebooting
