I would also download AVG's free rootkit detector. Also, don't use XP's firewall (its crap) use ZoneAlarm's free firewall. For spyware use Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware 2007 from LavaSoft.

I had my computer crash and when i installed windows xp durring that time i left a firewall on with maybe a couple exceptions but i didnt get the service pack 2 untill maybe a month later so i havent used a new firewall and i didnt use

any anti spyware software all i used was avg anti virus free edition and i know i downloaded many programs with spyware and stuff even i think a malware and the only security

i might have had is the fact that my computer is connected

through a wireless router which has a built in firewall and

Its your proxy you are going through. Google thinks you are trying to go through google to hack a site (based of the IP address you are internet is coming from). You either have to change the proxy, or just deal with it. (keep trying to do it).

What does this mean? I just did a virus scan/spyware scan (McAfee and Windows Defender). I have my automatic updates all installed. McAfee firewall is on to a high level. And my internet settings are on to the recommended level. This just started to happen now... it was working fine yesterday.

If you're NOT doing multiple searches in a short timeframe, then follow the instructions about looking for a virus and/or spyware that's running searches from your IP/machine automatically.

This is the problem I too face sometimes. However, there is no specific answer on this from any one. Its more of a google problem I guess.. if its from our end, following are the possible reasons for this kinda issues.

* It's because you are using anonymous surfing software.

As a result of using Internet I had massive problems with Spywares and viruses. I installed a toolbar and it came packaged with spyware and clutter up my browser with useless buttons. It happened quite a long time ago and I just tolerated that. But the serious problems started when I opened unknown email letter. One of virus on my computer was a really invasive spywere and made me to think seriously about doing something. I tried to delete some files I considered to be bad in a safe mode but it didn鈥檛 work. I thereafter routinely ran several antispyware programs, none of which eradicated the spyware totally. I've tried some protection systems, the free ones. As I鈥檓 not very experienced in that case I used the most typical programs. While trying different anti-viruses and anti-spyweres I downloaded the Spy-Shredder. I just wanted to put in a good word for the program. Actually it鈥檚 a great program and it helped me much. I have not had a spyware infection since I switched over to it and I haven't had any unwanted pop-ups either. I wanted to thank the guys who made the anti-spywere. I spent so many hours solving problems of my computer and trying to delete malicious stuff from it. Just love the program!

Hi, I have BT Total Broadband with the homehub which has the firewall set to the standard setting. My laptop is running like a dog and I was wondering if this is because there are conflicts with my Windows Firewall - but I don't want to turn it off without some advise first. So you've been taking some crap about Norton? Good! haha! OK, so it was free...so is the much better and faster Avast.

Anyway, on your computer, only run ONE software firewall. I dont know the "homehub", but it sounds like an external box - in which case it is not hurting you. If it is software (program running on your computer), disable it and only run the windows firewall. Check out your exceptions tab and disable appropriately.

Try running ccleaner (.com) and winpatrol (.com) to speed yourself up.

It's not the windows firewall do not turn it off the problem with your system is the Norton Antivirous take it off it's slowing your system to a halt. Bare in mind that Norton doesn't find viruses it only creates problems for your system as you can see. Avast is good but i have also just taken this off as it was conflicting my system making the start bar and all my icon's on the desktop dissapeared it was letting a vital virus in of which as been reported to Avast. Install Spybot, Adaware, and Avg version 7. Hope this helps..

Im having alot of pop ups on my laptop and my desktop computer things. I don't really recommend either Mcafee or Norton, as they are both bloated packages that use way too much memory causing your PC to run more slowly than it should. As far as the trial version thing goes...a trial for an antivirus program will stop allowing you to update to the latest virus definitions after the trial runs out. That means you will not be protected against any new viruses. In my opinion, there is no need to spend money on virus and spyware protection for your home PC. This is the effect of free edition of AVG. May I suggest you try the nod 32, kaspersky, or block defender free edition. I have tried them already. At present in our office computer installed with nod 32, and at home block defender, they are doing good performance.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search %26 Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

These are cleanup tools. Ad-aware cleans files, and SpyBot cleans the registry

What is all this on my SPYBOT and this SPYWAREBOT???

I downloaded this free program thinking it was feee to scan for spyware. I scanned with thit and it pulled up things that looks like a scam just to buy this program...as when it finished scanning it sayed I have 3800 items that needed to be tended to and then it sayed I had to register and buy the program to delete these items???? Then I found the SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY and it found a lot of things on registry and other things. Then it says before setup to make backup of registry keys in case something goes wrong when scanning and deleted infections. Is all this normal and safe???? It looks a lot 'different' than many of the adware/spyware/internet security programs I have seen, including the free ones. When you do an 'update'...it wants you to pick from various weird servers that are all over the world, as to where your download updates are going to come from. What's up with that? Most of those sites, I have never heard of...some don't even look like legit sites. Does anybody else use SS%26D and see this stuff? I got it from CNet's download.com. Just wondering why this interface is so weird, and why it downloads all of this crap with a bunch of odd extensions that aren't like other virus/spyware/adware extensions most programs have. Why does this one look so...what's the word..."hacker-like" with a bunch of crap everywhere on it? When it's searching...at the bottom it states that it's running a 'bot check'; and scrolls through all of these hundreds of crazy extensions it downloaded from who knows where. Yahoo and google links hijacked to webcry and porno sites when clicked from search engine?

Hi all,

The computer I am writing from is a working ambulance dispatch computer. The latest problem is the links from search enjines being redirected to webcry, and another site not affiliated with the search result link desired.

This is causing issues with the bosses thinking employees are cruising porno on the job. I am a supervisor and keep telling them that this is not nessesarilly the case as it does it automaticly, and my poor crews cant use a good tool for fear of a write up.

I am ok wit the computer and I have got AVG and Panda running the problem is restarting the computer as it is a busy machine and is needed to dispatch and track ambulance units and the log in process for this is sometimes too long. I have run hijack this and will post the log below, but I am gonna need as minimal reboots as possible.

How can I make my SLOW computer a bit faster?

My computer is quite slow. I'd like to make it a bit faster if I can, as it is quite annoying, but I'm not sure how.

Its a Compaq, only 3 years old, with a 325 processor, 256 MB RAM, and 40 GB hard drive, however, about 2 years ago I had Geek Squad install some more memory - I forget how much. But it was a fair bit.

I don't have any unnecessary programs or games or anything. And I always save all my photos and Word documents onto SD disks so they don't take up any memory. I do have some music saved on my computer, but not a massive amount.

It's really slow when I want to do simple things like switch tabs on IE, open Start Menu, when it comes off screen saver etc. I do disk cleanups all the time and I defraged it not too long ago.

I shouldn't have any spyware or adware (I don't think?) as I have a good security program with virus %26 spyware protection, firewall and spam controls.

Is there anything (free) that I can do to speed it up a bit? Thanks for your help :)

They make cell phones with faster processors and more memory than your computer. You can get a perfectly acceptable web surfing e-mailing machine from Dell for like $300.

As for cached pages, there is the Wayback machine but it may not have all the pages you need.

Or, if you're looking at a site's home page, you can see thumbnails on places like Alexa or domainTools.

I've seen that on my wife's work PC... that one is running office strength AV software and connects to the internet through some pretty tough firewalls, so I doubt it's a virus on your PC.

I think Google must be testing some context filtering crap on their searches (cos it had a 'type in what you see in the picture' kind of box) to stop search automata using Google... I guess your search (my seach) looked very similar to one that had just come in from somewhere else.

I used Counterspy and Adware-SE, and only one other piece of spy ware (an adtracker) was found. I presently use Firefox exclusively as my browser, Sunbelt Personal Firewall (paid registered version) is always running, Webroot Spy Sweeper is my main anti-spyware with Ad-Aware as secondary backup, and AVG Free edition is my anti-virus. In addition to that, I always run CCleaner after every internet session. I'm running on a Windows 2000 professional OS. Now the thing is that I run a scan with Spy Sweeper and AVG about once a week, but not once in about a year have I gotten anything at the end of any of the scans but "congratulations! no spyware/virus found" at the end of the scans. So what I need to know is whether my security suite is really working that well, or could there be something that it might be overlooking.

Any knowledgeable opinions out there?

My laptop has 2 GB of RAM and loaded with Windows Vista home premium edition (32 bit). It has a McAfee trial edition installed on it (came with the new laptop only). I am connected to internet most of the time while working on my laptop. Off late, the system is running slow (even the basic applications) and shows some weird behavior. Though the McAfee scan shows no malicious items found, I am afraid my laptop has been infected.

Try NOD32 (www.eset.com), they had free version for home users and works on Vista. Norton 360 might be a bit slower, though you got enough RAM for it.

Windows firewall is usually enough for your security, just switch it on. Norton has a firewall on its own, but I kinda do not like it. Well, thats personal taste.

For anti-spyware, Try SuperAntiSpyware free edition, Spybot search and destroy is recommended by lots of people as well, though i wont use it myself on almost any conditions ;)

Yes, the combination you are going to get is quite good, even though I would have preferred a few modifications. First of all, it will be unnecessary to keep SmitfraudFix all the time in your computer. Just download and use it if you ever are infected by Smitfraud. Next, Comodo Personal Firewall is much more powerful and better than the ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall, so get it instead (it's free too). Now coming to the anti-spyware, SpyBot alone isn't sufficient for complete spyware protection, get another one like Windows Defender or Spyware Terminator (they have real time protection). SpyBot will get along easily with either of them. Also make sure that you DON'T enable the Tea Timer feature of SpyBot. No comments on the anti-virus part.

Is there such a thing as an Internet connection log?

Everytime I am away from my computer for any length of time ( a few hours to a few days) when I return - it has logged itself onto the interent and different folders are open on my desktop...Programs/Common or some misc. text file from my desktop. Is there a way to see which program requested the connection to be established? I have SBC Yahoo's included Norton antivirus/spyware running and it says that I am bug free. Please help....it's freaking me out a bit....like I'm being watched!

Couple of things you can do.

First,, you can install a personnel firewall (Comodo is an example that is free). It will only allow connections to the internet which you explicitly allow. If anything else attempts to connect, it will be logged.

Next, you can install a packet sniffer (I use Wireshark). This is a bit more complicated since you would have to be fairly familiar with TCP/IP traffic. You can't really hurt anything using this, you just might not understand what you are looking at.

Although your AV is not picking anything up, I would recommend running a rootkit detector as it sounds like someone might be controlling your desktop remotely.

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer and look at the logs to see if you can narrow down what is causing you to automatically log on.

Also check Control Panel, Scheduled Tasks to see if anything is indicated there as well.

Finally go to Control Panel, Power Options and confirm that you are set up to actually turn off the computer. It could be actually going into a hibernation or sleep mode then restarting when a scheduled task comes due.

I have everyone there apart from AVG, and yes it's perfectly fine.

CCleaner isn't a spyware/malware scanner like the others, it scans for inaccuracies in your pc and file structures etc.

Spyware Doctor isn't technically a scanner, because it blocks websites known to contain malicious sctipts and spyware/malware.
Don't run them at the same time.

Here's (one of) a reason.

If one of them detect spyware/virus on your PC, one of the other will also likely detect it too. Now when the scans are done you will either choose to remove the spyware/virus or quarantine it.

Here comes the problem, If you quarantine it, one of the other programs might still detect it in the quarantine folders of one of the other programs making quite a fuss in you machine.

Run one of them at a time.

It will save you alot of trouble.

I also have several scanners on my PC. When I do my weekly scan I choose the one that I didn't use last time, increasing my chances of catching malware on the computer.

I have a 1 Gig P3 processor with 512 ram on my pc. I am told conflicting advice.

Some recommend using a internet security program such as Norton or McAfee for security.

Others say that these programs use up too much resources and if a virus and spyware scan is performed at least once a week that is sufficient.

Currently I use AVG free edition with basic Windows Firewall. I run antivirus and spyware scans about twice a week with little or no problems.

You have what you need......AVG is an excellent antivirus program, just make sure its up to date.....Windows firewall is sufficient for the majority of end users (normal pc users), and if you also have spybot search and destroy along with adaware installed and you run scans as often as you say and keep them up to date....no need to get anything else.

The "all-in-one" security suites just basically interface the different components into one program rather than running three or four.....Norton is a system hog, and Mcafee isn't much better....but all they really do is run all those programs you already have, all at the same time from one interface, so if it aint broke, don't fix it.

Firstly my thanks to the many who unselfishly and patiently answered my earlier question. I have in the past installed "free" software such as NOD 32 antivirus system and AVG Anti- spyware version 7.5. However I was told that I cannot update these and so it seems that after a few weeks or months such software becomes ineffective against any new viruses, worms, trojans, spyware and malware. So while many of you gave me lists of FREE anti virues etc etc software, will I have the same problems with them if I am not able to update these FREE?

NOD-32 and AVG Anti- spyware 7.5 are not free programs. You have the trial versions.

However:

AVG Free and AVAST Free Antivirus programs can be updated as often as you want. In Fact they update automatically (for free). AVG also has a Free spy ware and rootkit programs. But the 7.5 is not the free one.

Google "AVG Free" and you will be taken to the correct web site for downloading the Free ones.

Windows 2000 Printing error - need urgent help!!!?

PROBLEM - My printers have suddenly been deactivated. They sometimes show on the printer list, and when I refresh the list, they all disappear. I tried to add the printers again. When I hit the Add printer icon, I get a pop-up saying - "Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. Printer subsystem not available".

SOLUTIONS TRIED SO FAR -

Tried the time tested "reboot a million times" option - nothing.

Tried freeing up space on the C drive - to free up system resources - didn't work.

Have checked for spyware, viruses, etc. Came up zilch!

Tried reactivating print spooler from Administrative Tools/Services. The printers are displayed after spooler is run, but disappear when I refresh printer list.

OS - Windows 2000 Server Edition. Working over my office LAN - all the printers are on the network. None of the other machines on the network have this problem.

Please help!!!

Try this:

Click Start -%26gt; Run and type cmd and click OK

At the command prompt type these five commands

cd c:\winnt\system32\spool\printers

net stop spooler

del *.* (after enter type y for yes)

net start spooler

exit

Now try your printers

The c:\winnt\system32\spool\printers folder holds all of the print queues, not the actual printers themselves so don't worry about having to re-install anything.

To delete any bad jobs the spooler service has to be stopped first, hence net stop and net start spooler

Turn off computer UN plug printer from computer and from power wait a minute or two plug the printer to the computer then to the power start computer, it should recover.
Uninstall the printer. Then reinstall, and make sure it is listed as the default printer. Good luck.

I have the same thing, but you just have to think about updating the virus definitions every couple of days.
"Google Pack" (http://pack.google.com) is a suite of free software made available by Google.

One of the components in the pack is Spyware Doctor SE, a very decent anti-spyware. In my experience, it performs much better than Microsoft's Windows Defender.

right now, i'd give your computer a 2 because it's junked up. you don't need three web browsers,.....you don't need the optimizers you've got loaded..they just drag overall performance down, the only aspect you're ok is in your OS/AV/spyware protection. that's good and complete...the rest of the system....it needs to be thinned out a bit, plus, like i said, your system could sound like an 8 to someone...but if you've got crap hardware, then it'll never rate that high. i'll even tell you MY box for the hell of it:

If I were you I would get rid of one of them for its not good to have two antivirus programs at the same time..

I would also be careful with any register cleaner for it can really screw up your computer if not used right..

I don't think you can increase the compression rate because it's a constant, not a variable. You might like this free utility called 7-Zip. It's 100% freeware and it seems to work pretty well. The only time you'll get a request to upgrade is when they come out with a newer version :-)

Random GPU Lag spikes?

I have been tweaking my system using ATITool and when it renders i get a smooth picture and then every now and then it goes choppy, I checked the background applications and there is plenty of free RAM, and i have also scanned for Viruses and Spyware. I have 1 Gig System Ram and 128mb GPU Ram. I also found that the Page file was at 1 gig? is this normal, and how can i check if my system is running to its specifications, Ie: enabling Dual Channel RAM. and Dual Core.

What graphics card is it and what is your core and memory clock speeds before you over clock them?

Because I have a Asus 7300gs and before overclocking my engine (core) clock is 550mhz and my memory clock is 540mhz. After I overclock its 650mhz core clock and 710mhz memory clock and i get smooth and laggy pictures at times.

Have you tried checking your temperatures on your components to see if they are too hot or have you tried lowering the clock rates when overclocking because i find that works.
